Brush control as pest prevention.

Many Entomologists estimate that 90 percent of the pests which plague us inside our homes, come from outside. I think it is actually 100 percent, since the pests existed before any human building project occurred.

The fact is, that the pests that bug you, in your home, come from outside your home.

If you have brush and weeds near your home, you have a bug and rodent farm near your home. Some of those pests will eventually want to have dinner with you. If you want to get rid of bugs, mice, and snakes, the place to start, is to get rid of brush!

Insects like the cover that brush provides, armadillos, snakes, field mice and rats like the insects, and the cover as well. Brush not only hides a lot of unwanted activity, human, animal, and insect, it also devalues property, increases the chance of fire, and uses an inordinate amount of water.

Brush clearing and property value.

Just as having brush on your property lowers it's value, of course, clearing it from your property increases it's value. Real estate that is overgrown with brush is not very likely to impress potential buyers. Real estate setting next door to a brush filled swamp isn't a very good value either. Most buyers know this instinctively. I spoke with one couple recently who bought a house in a situation like this. They lived there for a short time, before they finally could stand it no longer, and asked my permission to put a "for sale" sign up on my corner.

Fire caused by allowing brush to grow out of hand, has been disastrous for home owners. Insurance companies and fire departments across the country are catching on, and seeing brush as being an unnecessary risk. Better to remove it before such an event, than to cope with the consequences.

Brush clearing as water conservation.

Across the country, brush uses an inordinate amount of water in comparison to other types of plants. There are state ordered plans for dealing with brush in most states for that very reason.

Brush control and the environment.

Some people think that clearing the brush we see around property is damaging to the environment. The opposite is really true. Most of the brush we see, is a result of land once cleared for pastures or farmland, or of open areas being disturbed by cultivation. What grows back, in either case, is not natural, and rarely benefits the environment. A lot of areas were once cleared for pasture, farmland or homesteads, only to be abandoned at a latter date, and allowed to grow out of control. the brush problem is the result.

That's when the trouble starts. As soon as cover is available bugs, reptiles and vermin move in. As the brush increases, so do the numbers of other pests. When summer arrives, the brush becomes potential tinder for any spark from any cause. This brush then fuels fires higher in the canopy, and in many cases leads to full scale forest fires.
