Rational Environmental Solutions, the parent of this blog, offers pest control information on the world wide web through sites like www.BugsAndWeeds.com, AlienPest.com, and a few other similar sites. On the Bugs And Weeds site we offer prevention information which makes some people wonder if we have lost our minds. We are in the business of pest control, why would we be telling people how to prevent pests? Well, it is worth thinking about. In the first place, there are enough bugs and weeds to go around, and if someone wants to control their own, that is fine with us. We offer the information for those folks who would be practicing their own pest control, with pesticides if they could not obtain such information. Also, we offer the prevention information in the form of a service as well, through our pest service company, TexPest.
In reality, I do not know of a single Pest Control Operator who would not prefer to reduce his own exposure, to harmful pesticides, and the associated risks. So what is it that keeps us in business?
Well, for one thing, homeowners want it. I can tell you that there have been numerous occasions when I have suggested, and encouraged, a less toxic or non toxic solution to a pest problem, one that would have been in the same price range as a chemical application, and the homeowner wants to stick with what they know.
I believe that as the news about alternatives, coupled with concern for safety grows in our country, people will seek out those who can help them using less toxic, or non toxic means. In fact, it is already happening.
I don’t think that blaming the pesticide manufacturers is a good idea. They are merely meeting what is a real, or perceived need. They have produced many products that are less dangerous than the generations of pesticides before them. Many of these chemicals are applied in lower doses, (one plant specific herbicide is applied at a rate of .33 onces per acre) most of these degrade after soil contact in a very short time, and go back to their harmless constituent components.
We will see changes in the pest control industry as folks become more green, and we are on the leading edge, and have been for a long time.
